BURNOUT ; THE SILENT COACH KILLER
Jun 24, 2025Introduction
Are you someone who pours all their energy into clients and struggles to find time for… well, everything else?
There’s never enough time.
So, what’s most important right now?
If your only strategy is to “do it all,” then injury, chronic fatigue, and burnout are right around the corner.
This article is about helping you figure out where your time and energy are best spent right now. If you find it helpful, I’ve attached an e-book at the end that expands on these ideas.
- The Trainer’s Curse
Why are so many strong, fit trainers unsure how to save or invest money?
In my experience, it’s because our default is spending time in the gym. We’re more likely to sign up for another race or fitness event than hire a financial professional.
We overdose on training and underdose what would actually grow our businesses.
The first shift is understanding that in a high-stress job, we get better results when training is built on the minimum effective dose.
Ask: What’s the least amount of training I can do to see great results and still have energy for other things?
There will be seasons for higher training volume and seasons when you can’t handle much at all. Learn to pivot to avoid injury, under-recovery, and burnout.
- What Stage Are You In?
Advice changes depending on where you’re at in your coaching career.
Years 0–5:
Grind. Fall in love with the craft. Get really good. Experiment. Don’t stress about doing it all. Start posting content by sharing client wins and just have fun with it.
Years 5–10:
Now you’ve built a book of business and are making more money. You’ve earned some options. Use your content to tell your story and cut out things that no longer serve you.
Years 10+:
You’re likely done with trainer hours. Family, relationships, and personal fulfillment take priority.
If you’ve invested in yourself consistently, you’ve earned the right to work with who you want, when you want.
Craft your ideal schedule by getting clear on what energizes you and eliminate what drains you.
- Best Use of Your Time
To spend your time wisely, you need to know your limiting factor. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Revenue
It’s not all about money, but… you need it.
Start by knowing your numbers: income, average session cost, and sessions per week.
Then double down on education and ask are you in the right environment to charge what you’re worth? - Time
If time is your bottleneck, map out your current schedule.
Where are the high-ROI hours where you earn the most in the least amount of time?
Double down there. - Energy
When training and work stress combine, you might be unable to recover.
Boundaries are key. Adjust work and training volume to find your sweet spot for energy and performance in both life and business.
Once you know the limiting factor, the key is focusing as much energy into solving that problem as you can.Developing boundaries around your time will help you value your time.
If you value your time, and don't compromise often, other people will start to value your time too. - Your Stress Management Toolbox
No matter your stage, recovery is essential.
Time outdoors, connection with friends, and play aren’t luxuries they’re regulation tools.
Early on, it might be short breaks. Later, it’s firm, uncompromising boundaries around your time.
- Non-Negotiable #1: Continuing Education
Ongoing education has always been one of my core values. It’s the most sustainable edge you can have.
Yes, it takes time but it’s worth it.
My rule: one course per quarter, one mentorship per year.
It keeps you inspired, sharpens your skills, and raises your impact.
Take breaks if needed, but this should stay on your radar.
- Non-Negotiable #2: Content
Content is free marketing. Your IG profile is your new resume whether you like it or not.
Most coaches hate creating content because it takes time. The fix? Make it fun and authentic.
Post 2–3x per week. Share what you do and what you think.
Small, consistent investments in content creation help scale your time and open new revenue streams.
- Non - negotiable #3 : Community
I want you to imagine you’re going through this journey with no one to talk to or bounce ideas off of.
Then imagine you have people just like you, who are going through similar challenges that you can talk to along the way.
That’s why community is vital in the sustainability of your career.
Conclusion
You’ll need a strong work capacity to thrive in this industry.
As you build it, you'll get tired and you’ll need to get very clear on where your time is best spent to avoid burnout.
Clarity around where you’re going—and what deserves your energy—is key to long-term success and sustainability.
